blogPrinting a bit of gratitude

Thank you’s from the bottom of my (linoleum block) heart.

Linoleum block printing is one of my absolute favorite things to do, yet I rarely do it. When I come back to it, I remember how much I enjoy the process. The repetitive motion of gouging out chunks from the block puts me in a zone and for that bit of time, I forget everything I was preoccupied with just prior to making that first cut. Then there is the smell of the ink and the sound of pulling my first print from the block. Block printing is also one of the rare times that I am comfortable with loose, sketchy work. I appreciate and embrace the imperfections rather than worry about them. With other media, I am usually much more rigid, fixate on cleanliness and aim for a smooth finish. With block prints however, the more textural they are, the better. So the entire process is quite relaxing for me. Since I am big on gratitude as well, I decided to create a “Thank You” print. This is a literal thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I am a fan of saying “thank you” as often as possible, but wanted to create something to give as a small token of my gratitude.
