Newest piece, created for Infectious: The Art of Glitter at BlueLucy.
Infectious was full of glitz and glitter. Here is an explanation of my piece. There is glitter in it, promise. Titled “Because it is in our marrow and in our souls, we shall sparkle for eternity”, it is a bit of an homage to my friendship with one of the most uniquely kind-hearted and genuine women I’ve ever met…my unicorn sister. For me, the unicorn has become a personal symbol, representing all that is beautiful in how unique some people are. When is exceptionally caring, thoughtful, helpful, positive, giving…he/she is eternally beautiful, they even sparkle. These people who are not easily understood by the majority, but deeply loved by a those who truly get to know them. You can feel it when that person enters a room, when they speak or even by merely thinking about them. In this piece, the two unicorn skulls represent myself and my unicorn sister. The hourglass and feathers are my own take on the winged hourglass that traditionally symbolizes eternity and divinity. By positioning the skulls with spines crossing, I put a spin on the traditional skull and crossbones, which also relates to the concept of eternal life. The leaves running along the bottom border are shaped like oak leaves. Traditionally, oak is tied to strength and durability. The Chinese Magnolias that are growing up the spines of the unicorns are a symbol of perseverance. The raw wood section and pink inner frame are covered in a clear coat with glitter, while the openings at the bottom of the spines are filled with pink and gold glitter.
